Baldur's Gate 3 entered the dojo with enormous expectations, and somehow managed to walk through the doors without stumbling. From the moment you wake aboard that strange, writhing ship, the game makes it clear that this is an adventure where almost anything can happen. Its greatest strength is the freedom it gives you to decide what kind of warrior you want to be. Conversations can become battles, battles can be avoided entirely, and seemingly insignificant choices can return hours later with consequences you never saw coming. The world feels less like a collection of quests and more like a place that is genuinely reacting to you and what you do.
Then there are the companions, who may be the game's greatest achievement. They aren't simply followers waiting for orders; they have their own personalities, ambitions, flaws, and opinions about the choices you make. Their relationships develop naturally, and some of the game's most memorable moments have nothing to do with combat at all. When the story does ask you to make difficult choices, the game trusts you enough to let you make the wrong one and live with the consequences rather than constantly steering you toward the correct answer.
It isn't without its flaws. The sheer amount of freedom can occasionally expose some rough edges, with quests or interactions behaving in unexpected ways, and the final stretch doesn't always maintain the same level of polish and momentum found earlier in the journey. The learning curve can also be intimidating for anyone unfamiliar with Dungeons & Dragons-style systems. But these are minor wounds on an otherwise exceptional warrior.
Baldur's Gate 3 is the kind of game that reminds you why games can be more than a series of objectives leading to an ending. It gives you a world, a set of rules, and enough freedom to make the adventure genuinely yours. Few games trust their players this much, and even fewer manage to turn that freedom into something this consistently memorable. This warrior has more than earned its place among the dojo's finest.
